GETTING TO KNOW MRS. STRAW:

 

Tell us about yourself:
My name is Heather Straw and I was born and raised in Utah. I have a personal love for Saint Olaf Catholic School as I attended Saint Olaf in grade school. I graduated from the University of Utah with my Bachelors of Science in Human Development and Family Studies with an emphasis in Child Life, a focus in Geology, and minors in both Anthropology and Astrophysics. I am currently attending Southern Utah University for my Masters of Education in School Leadership. I am married with four children and live in Ogden. Before I became a science teacher, I worked as a director of multiple supplemental learning facilities including Mathnasium and Sylvan. I have a background in teaching math as well as a background in special education.


If you could have lunch with 1 person dead or alive, who would that be and why?

Albert Einstein because he was devoted to understanding the natural world and he believes in the value of kind to others.

What is something on your Bucket List?

Living on a beach next to the ocean. I love the mountains, but my heart tells me I need to be close to the water.

What book have you read that changed you and why?

Fahrenheit 451 because it highlights how societies can be corrupted by censorship by distracting people from the truth.

What is your favorite thing about teaching or working with young people?

The relationships I build with the students.

How would a friend describe you in three words?

Passionate, Engaging, and Funny.

If you had to compare yourself to one fictional character, who would it be and why?

Ms. Frizzle because I teach science.

What is the best BAD decision you ever made?

Marrying a social studies teacher.

When are you most yourself?

When I am outside, near water, while spending time with my family and friends.

What could you spend all day talking about?

Plants, cats, science, astronomy, education/teaching, my family.

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

Travel
