About Ms. Shriver

GETTING TO KNOW MS. SHRIVER:

Tell us about yourself:
My name is Alyssa Shriver. I moved to Utah in September 2020 from Orlando, Florida. I studied Studio Art with a concentration in 2-Dimensional at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. I studied abroad in Florence, Italy where I focused on fashion and drawing. My goal this year for students is to become creative in different mediums and styles of art whether that includes sculpture, installations, drawing, painting, etc. I’m so excited for my first year at St. Olafs and cannot wait to meet everyone!
If you could have lunch with 1 person dead or alive, who would that be and why?
I would love to have lunch with Louise Nevelson. She is one of my favorite artists. She inspired me to include sculpture elements into my work during college.
What is something on your Bucket List?
I’m hoping I can travel to 40 countries before 40!
What book have you read that changed you and why?
The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris. I usually don’t lean towards historical and biographical fiction but this book is the prime example of what unconditional love looks like even through the darkest times.
What is your favorite thing about teaching or working with young people?
I love teaching because young people are so curious, fun and willing to learn. I enjoy teaching because I help students discover, challenge themselves and create.
How would a friend describe you in three words?
Creative, energetic and organized.
If you had to compare yourself to one fictional character, who would it be?
I’m most like Mary Poppins. I am very clean and organized. If only snapping while cleaning actually worked!
What is the best BAD decision you ever made?
I skipped my college graduation so I could study abroad in Italy. My family said I would regret sitting through a six hour, Bachelor of Arts graduation but I did not. Italy was so inspiring and I made so many memories traveling throughout Italy and France.
When are you most yourself?
I’m most myself at home. I love expanding my mind whether that’s creating art or reading whatever book I’m currently reading.
What could you spend all day talking about?
I could spend all day talking about traveling. I’ve been blessed to be able to travel to 13 foreign countries in my lifetime. I’m always interested in learning about different cultures, art and history.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
When I’m not working I enjoy hiking or traveling to new places on the weekends. I also enjoy reading for an hour or two a day.
