Comprehension

Students will be given a short story to read throughout the week that will be about different topics. This will help to improve student’s comprehension and to work on their writing skills. It should not take a ton of time to complete, if a little bit is completed each night. I have included a schedule of what it should look like throughout the week.

Monday: Go over vocabulary words that will be in the passage and then make a prediction of what you think the story will be about (done before reading the passage). Read the passage completely and think about what message the author is trying to tell you. Please answer the prediction question in complete sentences repeating the question.

Tuesday: Have students reread the passage, then color code it (use a highlighter, marker, or crayon) the passage with the colors: green (topic sentence / concluding sentence), yellow (key star ideas), and red (explanation / evidence / evidence).

Wednesday: Have students reread the passage again and answer the comprehension questions that are on the back.Written answers must be answered in complete sentences.

Thursday: Reread the story again and summarize the passage in 2 to 3 sentences. Pleaselookbackatthe story and refer to the stoplight colors, include the main idea (green) and the key star ideas (yellow).

35 Book Reading Challenge

Books must be at least 100 pages to count for this challenge. If a book is less than 100 pages or substantially below the student’s reading level, we have classified the book as a “quick read” book. Students may count up to 5 quick reads for the challenge. A book over 250 pages will count for 2 books in that genre; 375 = 3 books; 500 = 4 books; 600 = 5 books; etc.

When finished with a book, add it to your BiblioNasium account. You can see what genre the book fits under by looking up the book on BiblioNasium, Amazon or Scholastic. Page numbers can also be found on Amazon. BiblioNasium Logins can be found in student planners.

Students will be tested on their spelling and vocabulary on Friday, February 8th. This week is a short week, so students only need to complete FOUR activities for spelling. On Monday, students receive their spelling and vocabulary words in a packet to be completed by FRIDAY. Students need to choose ONE spelling activity to complete each day and then turn in FOUR activities on FRIDAY. Please make sure student's name is on the homework and that students complete each activity completely! Parents, please make sure students are completing their spelling homework and please sign the activity on the spelling paper.
